Peter Fritzsche, professor of history
MAHWAH, N.J. – On Friday, October 16 at 2 p.m., Peter Fritzsche, Ph.D., the W.D. & Sarah E. Trowbridge professor of history at the University of Illinois, will discuss his recent book, Hitler’s First Hundred Days: When Germans Embraced the Third Reich (Basic Books), in conversation with ÃØÃÜÑо¿Ëù history professor Sam Mustafa. The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies is sponsoring the event that will be delivered remotely via WebEx, and Center Director Michael A. Riff will serve as moderator for the event. All wishing to participate may register at:
Fritzsche’s probing account reveals how Germany’s fractured republic, in the spring of 1933, turned itself inside out, from a deeply divided republic into a one-party dictatorship. His examination of this transition includes the mass arrests, dismals of Jews and leftists from state service and anti-Jewish boycotts, and sheds light on how Hitler and the National Socialists simultaneously terrified and beguiled ordinary Germans.
In many respects, it is the chilling story of the beginning of the end.
A specialist in modern German history, Fritzsche is the author of ten previous books, including An Iron Wind: Europe Under Hitler and the award-winning Life and Death in the Third Reich. He holds a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He has taught at the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign since 1987.
