Biography

Marina Carreira is a queer Luso-American writer and multimedia artist from Newark, NJ. She is the author of 鈥淪ave the Bathwater鈥 (Get Fresh Books, 2018) and 鈥淚 Sing to That Bird Knowing It Won鈥檛 Sing Back鈥 (Finishing Line Press, 2017). She has work featured in聽Queen Mob鈥檚 Teahouse,聽Paterson Literary Review, The Acentos Review, Pittsburgh Poetry Review, Green Mountain Review, Hinchas de Poesia, wildness journal, and Harpoon Review.聽Marina is a recipient of the Sundress Academy for the Arts Summer 2021 Residency fellowship.聽Her chapbook, 鈥tanto tanto鈥, was a Headmistress Press – 2020 Charlotte Mew Chapbook Contest Semi-Finalist. As a visual artist, she has exhibited her work at Morris Museum, ArtFront Galleries, West Orange Arts Council, Monmouth University Center for the Arts, and Living Incubator Performance Space {LIPS} in the Gateway Project Spaces in Newark, NJ.聽聽She is founding member of 鈥淏rick City Collective鈥, a Newark-based multicultural, multimedia group working for social change through the arts.

 

Leaning into the Unknown聽Performance Summary

鈥淭anto Tanto鈥 is Carreira鈥檚 new full-length manuscript of poems centered on queer love told through the lens of immigrant culture during the pandemic. Audiences will view her paintings which serve as the backdrop to her staged reading of thirteen new works that highlight the impact that compulsory heterosexuality has on queer first-generation Luso-American women.
